What is a HEIC file?
HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container, the format Apple has used by default on iPhones and iPads since iOS 11. It stores photos at high quality while using far less space than older formats. The downside is compatibility: many websites, Windows applications, and older devices cannot open HEIC files, so converting them to a standard format like PNG makes them easy to use anywhere.
HEIC vs PNG: which should you use?
PNG is a lossless format, meaning it preserves every pixel of the original image with no compression artifacts. That makes it ideal for screenshots, graphics with text, logos, and any image you plan to edit repeatedly. PNG also supports transparency, which JPG does not. The trade-off is file size: PNG files are considerably larger than JPG, so for everyday photos you intend to share or upload, JPG is usually the more practical choice.
When to convert HEIC to PNG
Convert HEIC to PNG when quality matters more than file size, for example when you need a crisp image for a document, a presentation, or further editing in a graphics tool. For regular photos you want to send to clients or post online, use our HEIC to JPG converter instead for smaller, easier-to-share files.
