At 1/1000s a sprinter’s foot is frozen mid-stride, every spike on the shoe visible. At 1/30s the same foot is a smear, and at 1/4s the runner is a ghost drifting through a perfectly sharp stadium.
Shutter speed is the one camera setting whose result you can picture before you take the shot. It is also the one pulling double duty, changing both how bright the photo is and how motion is recorded, and those two effects pull against each other all day long.
What is shutter speed?
Shutter speed is how long the sensor is exposed to light, measured in seconds and fractions of a second. Most cameras run from around 30 seconds at the slow end to 1/4000s or 1/8000s at the fast end, and stacked-sensor mirrorless bodies go further: Nikon’s published spec for the Z8 puts its electronic shutter ceiling at 1/32,000s.
Cameras drop the “1/” on screen, so 250 means 1/250s, while whole seconds get a quotation mark, making 2” a two second exposure. The part that trips up everyone at first is that a bigger bottom number means a shorter exposure. 1/500s is faster than 1/60s, lets in less light, and freezes more motion.
Each halving of the duration is one stop, the same unit used for aperture and ISO: 1/30, 1/60, 1/125, 1/250, 1/500, 1/1000. Most cameras step in third-stops by default, which is why 1/320 and 1/400 turn up between 1/250 and 1/500.
Shutter speed does two jobs at once
Shutter speed sets brightness and motion rendering with the same dial. Halving the duration removes exactly one stop of light, which has to come back from a wider aperture or a higher ISO, and that trade is the whole point of the exposure triangle.
What makes shutter speed the setting to decide first is that its side effect is the least forgiving. A stop of ISO costs a little noise, a stop of aperture shifts depth of field, but a stop of shutter speed can be the difference between a keeper and a write-off: motion blur is the one exposure mistake no amount of editing undoes.
Which shutter speed should you use for each subject?
Match the shutter speed to how fast the subject is moving: 1/1000s for field sports, 1/250s for people walking, 1/125s for a posed portrait, and whole seconds when blur is the point. The numbers below assume the subject crosses the frame sideways, which is the worst case; someone walking straight toward you needs about one stop less.

Focal length matters as much as the subject: a runner filling the frame at 200mm crosses the sensor far faster than the same runner at 35mm, so long lenses need more speed for identical motion.
What counts as a fast shutter speed?
A fast shutter speed is 1/500s or shorter, and its job is to freeze motion the eye cannot follow. 1/1000s stops a footballer mid-kick, 1/2000s holds a bird’s wingtips still, and at 1/4000s individual water droplets hang separately in the air.
The cost of fast shutter speed photography is always light. Going from 1/125s to 1/1000s throws away three stops: opening from f/5.6 to f/2.8 covers two, and the last comes from ISO. This is exactly where high ISO photography earns its place, because a clean blurred frame is worthless and a slightly noisy sharp one is not.
Two hardware constraints show up at the fast end. Flash sync caps most cameras at 1/200s or 1/250s with a standard flash; above that you need high-speed sync, which costs one to two stops of flash power. And an electronic shutter reads the sensor out line by line, so fast pans can skew, bending a golf club or leaning a helicopter rotor sideways. That is a readout-speed limit rather than an exposure-time one, which is why stacked sensors handle it better.
What counts as a slow shutter speed?
A slow shutter speed is 1/30s or longer, and it turns blur from a mistake into the subject. Panning at 1/30s to 1/60s keeps a moving car sharp while the background streaks. A waterfall at 1/4s to 2s becomes smooth cloth. City traffic at 10 to 30 seconds leaves continuous ribbons of light where individual cars were.
Slow shutter speed photography needs a tripod, and past about 1/4s the tripod matters more than the camera sitting on it. In daylight it also needs less light than you have, which is what neutral density filters are for: a 6-stop ND turns 1/60s into a full second at the same aperture and ISO, and a 10-stop pushes a bright afternoon into 15 to 30 second territory. Shoot the same composition several times, because a few seconds of a moving world never record identically twice.
The reciprocal rule keeps handheld shots sharp
The reciprocal rule says shutter speed should be at least 1 over the focal length: 1/50s at 50mm, 1/200s at 200mm. Slower than that and your own hand movement shows up as camera shake, magnified by every millimeter of focal length. Two adjustments make the rule work on modern cameras:
- Crop sensors need more speed. Multiply the focal length by the crop factor first: 1.5x on Nikon DX, Sony APS-C, and Fujifilm X, or 1.6x on Canon APS-C. A 50mm lens on a Canon APS-C body wants 1/80s, not 1/50s.
- High-resolution sensors are less forgiving. On a 45 or 61 megapixel body, shake that hid inside a 24 megapixel file is obvious at 100%, so doubling the rule is a sane habit.
Stabilization buys that speed back. Canon labels it IS, Nikon VR, Panasonic OIS, while Sony uses OSS on lenses and SteadyShot in bodies; manufacturers rate the benefit in stops under the CIPA standard, and current bodies claim roughly 5 to 8 of them. The caveat matters more than the number: stabilization corrects camera movement, never subject movement. A stabilized 1/8s frame of a person standing still will still show a blurred person.
How do you set shutter speed on your camera?
Shutter priority mode, marked S on Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm, and Panasonic and Tv on Canon and Pentax, lets you choose the shutter speed while the camera picks the aperture. It is the fastest way to guarantee a specific motion result.
Manual mode with Auto ISO is what most event and sports photographers actually use: set aperture and shutter speed by intent, then let ISO absorb the light as you move from a bright church aisle to a dim altar. Every system lets you set a floor so the camera never drops below your chosen speed. Canon calls it Min. shutter spd., Nikon Minimum shutter speed, and Sony ISO AUTO Min. SS, each with an automatic option that tracks focal length as you zoom; Canon’s documentation notes its Auto setting defaults to the reciprocal of the focal length.
How to tell motion blur from camera shake and missed focus
Three failures look like the same soft photo, and shutter speed is responsible for only two of them:
- Subject motion blur: the moving parts smear while the background stays sharp. Raise the shutter speed.
- Camera shake: the whole frame smears in one direction. Raise the shutter speed, brace better, or switch stabilization on.
- Missed focus: the blur is soft and even, with something else in the frame perfectly sharp. Shutter speed will not help, and this is the most common of the reasons photos are not sharp.
Fast shutter speeds cause one more problem indoors. LED and fluorescent lights pulse with the mains supply, and a short exposure catches them mid-cycle, banding the frame green or magenta or making brightness lurch between frames in a burst. In 60 Hz countries such as the US and Canada, 1/60s and 1/125s are safe; in 50 Hz regions including Europe, use 1/50s or 1/100s. Most cameras also have a countermeasure worth switching on: Anti-flicker Shoot on Canon and Sony, Flicker reduction on Nikon.
Spend an afternoon photographing one moving thing at 1/1000s, then 1/250s, then 1/60s, then 1/15s, changing nothing else. Shutter speed stops being an abstract number once you have seen the same subject rendered four different ways by your own hand, and from then on you are choosing it deliberately instead of accepting whatever the camera offers.
