Freeze a sprinter at 1/1000s and the frame is sharp. Shoot the same runner at 1/250s and you get a blur of arms with one perfectly sharp shoe. Sports photography is built around that decision, and nearly every other setting exists to make a fast enough shutter possible.
The harder part comes after. A 90-minute match at 10 frames per second produces 2,000 to 4,000 frames, and the coach wants them Monday. Getting the shot is a craft problem; getting 300 keepers to 40 parents is the workflow problem that eats sports photographers alive.
What shutter speed freezes sports action?
Shutter speed is the first setting to lock in sports photography, and it is dictated by the fastest-moving part of the athlete, not the athlete overall. A soccer player runs at maybe 20 mph, but the foot striking the ball moves several times faster, and that extremity goes soft first.

The camera settings for sports photography that survive a full game are manual shutter and aperture with auto ISO on top. You fix the two variables that control the picture and let the camera absorb the light shifting as play crosses from sun into shadow.

Expose for the jerseys, not the field, since white kit against green grass fools matrix metering into underexposing by roughly two-thirds of a stop.
Continuous autofocus and back-button focus keep a moving athlete sharp
Continuous autofocus is non-negotiable for sports action photography. Canon calls it Servo AF on mirrorless bodies and AI Servo on DSLRs; Nikon and Sony both call it AF-C. The camera refocuses while the shutter button is half-pressed, tracking the subject as the distance changes.
Then move focus onto the AF-ON button on the back. Back-button focus separates focusing from firing, so you can hold focus on a receiver, release the button when a defender crosses in front, and keep shooting without the camera grabbing the wrong subject.
Finally, tune tracking sensitivity toward the sticky end so a referee crossing the frame does not steal focus. Canon calls this setting AF Cases, Nikon blocked-shot AF response, Sony AF Tracking Sensitivity on a 1 to 5 scale.
A 70-200mm f/2.8 covers most sports photography assignments
If you own one lens for sports photography, make it a 70-200mm f/2.8. From a sideline it covers most of a basketball court, an entire hockey rink, and half a soccer pitch, and the constant f/2.8 buys a full stop over the f/4 zooms once the floodlights come on.

Stabilization steadies a heavy lens but does nothing for subject motion, so treat it as a comfort feature, not a sharpness one. Spot it on a spec sheet by the maker’s initials: Canon prints IS, Nikon VR, Sony OSS, Fujifilm OIS, Sigma OS, Tamron VC. Teleconverters reach further cheaply at a cost: a 1.4x loses one stop and turns an f/2.8 into an f/4, a 2x loses two.
Indoor sports are an exposure problem before they are a technique problem
Indoor sports photography settings bottom out around f/2.8, 1/500s, ISO 3200 to 6400 in a typical high school gym, and no setting rescues a badly lit venue. Accept the noise: modern full-frame sensors are clean enough at ISO 6400 that a sharp noisy frame beats a smooth blurred one.
Switch on anti-flicker shooting, which Nikon labels flicker reduction. Arena lights pulse with the mains supply, 120Hz in North America and 100Hz across most of Europe, and without flicker detection a 10-frame burst returns inconsistent brightness and green or magenta shifts between frames.
Set a custom white balance from a gray card before tip-off. Metal halide and mixed LED produce casts that auto white balance chases frame to frame, making a 300-image gallery look amateur.
Position determines the picture more than the lens does
Where you stand decides what you can photograph, and it is the one variable in sports photography that costs nothing to improve. Put the athlete’s face toward the camera rather than the back of a jersey: shoot from behind the goal line or corner flag, roughly 5 to 10 meters off the post, so attacking play comes toward you. Keep the sun behind you, and check the background before the athlete. A sponsor board separates the subject cleanly; a parking lot behind the goal ruins the frame.
Culling is where the sports photography workflow actually breaks
A single match leaves a sports photographer with 2,000 to 4,000 frames, and the difference between a profitable season and an exhausting one is how fast that pile becomes a gallery. Target a first pass under an hour, in two rounds.
On the first, reject anything technically dead: out of focus, cut off at the frame edge, eyes closed, mid-blink. On the second, keep only the peak moment from each sequence, because a 5-frame burst of one tackle is one photograph. From 3,000 frames, 200 to 400 keepers is a normal delivery. Tag by jersey number as you go. Every parent wants their own child, and a gallery organized by athlete is the difference between 40 happy families and 40 emails asking where number 12 is.
Delivering high-volume galleries to teams and parents
Sports galleries carry more images and more recipients than almost any other photography work: one youth league season can mean 15 teams, 200 athletes, and thousands of frames, all heading to families who open the link on a phone in a parking lot.
That volume rules out the obvious options.
